Five Basic Marine Documents To Have To Work On A Merchant Ship
Good day my very esteemed readers, very recently i have been receiving mails from my readers inquiring what qualifications or certificate they need to have so they can work on-board a merchant ships. So i decided to write this post so it can guide you on what document to have.
i am happy to tell you that you don’t need to have a Bsc in Marine Engineering before you can work on-board vessels, myself i do not have Bsc before i became a Mariner i studied Information Technology maintenance. but you need some training and qualifications that are always required for marine jobs. Below are list of general documents required for marine jobs irrespective of the department.
1.INTERNATIONAL PASSPORT.
everyone who intends to work on-board a vessel or merchant ship must have an international passport. this is because most times merchant ships go on international voyages and crew members must have their countries passport. this can be gotten from the immigration service of the country

2. SEA MAN DISCHARGE BOOK
Seaman Service Book (SSB) or Seaman Discharge Book is a continuous record of a seaman’s service. This document certifies that the person holding is a seaman as per The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978, as amended from time to time. this document is issued by the countries Maritime Administrator. for Nigerians its issued by The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA)
3. STANDARD OF TRAINING , CERTIFICATE AND WATCHKEEPING FOR SEAFARER(STCW)
The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978 sets qualification standards for masters, officers and watch personnel on seagoing merchant ships. this certificate proves that the holder has under gone some basic training and have acquired basic knowledge of working onboard a merchant ship, it is a most have document. this document is issued by any recognized and certified maritime school or agency. for Nigerian it can be gotten from Nigeria Maritime Academy Orun
4. YELLOW FEVER BOOK
just like the Sea Man Discharge Book, it is also issued by a countries Maritime Agency in the case of Nigeria, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency NIMAS. this certificate shoes that the holder has been vaccinated against Yellow fever. the vaccination usually last for a period of ten 10 years before another is taken. all Seamen have it
5. ENG1 CERTIFICATE
The Maritime Labour Convention(MLC) states that every seafarer must have a valid medical certificate recognized by the administration before they can start work at sea. The ENG1 is a basic medical examination, carried out by a Maritime and Coast Guide Agency(MCA) certified doctor, confirming that you are in a fit condition to work on board a Sea going Merchant Ship
