Federal Govt. Scraps HND Merge Polytechnics With University To Award BTech
For years now Polytechnics graduates with Higher National Diploma (HND) has often lamented over the look down of their certificates which has been the major reason why Students will chose Universities over Polytechnics any day any time except for the fact that Cut off marks set by Universities for JAMB were not reached. Earlier This year the Federal Government through the Ministry of education Scraped Post UTME and set a cut off mark for both Universities and Polytechnics to be 180, it was a welcomed development for students who seeks admission into higher Universities and Polytechnics, when we all thought this is the best news Nigerian Students will hear, Ministry of Education Intend to Scrap HND certificate with aim to award Bachelor Of Technology (BTech) to Polytechnic Graduates.
this information was disclosed through the Minister of Education Dr. Adamu Adamu, that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has reportedly approved the scrapping of the award of the Higher National Diploma (HND) by polytechnics in the country. This move is part of the comprehensive reform of the tertiary education sector by the present administration, and that the Federal Government has now restricted the award to only the students currently on admission in various polytechnics, This is following the Federal Government’s decision to scrap programmes currently being run by the polytechnics, which are not technology-based.
The Minister of Education Dr. Adamu Adamu also disclosed that polytechnics will now become campuses of the proximate universities with the Vice Chancellors of those universities appointing provosts for the polytechnics, subject to the ratification of the Universities’ Councils.
The Minister also stated that Polytechnics with this recent development will only award National Diploma (ND), while students who intend to further will be awarded with Bachelor of Technology (BTech)
He stated that the two top polytechnics, Yaba College of Technology and Kaduna Polytechnic will now be named City University of Technology, Yaba and City University of Technology, Kaduna respectively.
The FEC, to confirm this decision, has approved the submission of the two Executive bills to the National Assembly for enactment into law.
